Firms To Watch: Environment

Former Creel, García-Cuéllar, Aiza y Enríquez, S.C. senior associate Mariana Westendarp departed the firm in April 2025 to become a founding partner at environmental boutique B&W Derecho y Sustentabilidad along with Yanin Beltrán. Westendarp can call on some 15 years private practice experience across the full range of environmental matters from transactional and day-to-day operational issues to remedial work across multiple industries and in relation to water and wastewater, environmental impact and risk, emissions, hazardous waste, climate change, carbon markets and coastal ecosystems, among other matters. Beltrán, in turn, has over a decade’s experience in the public sector, as both a legal analyst and as a subdirector for the investigation of environmental incident reports (part of the Environmental Prosecutor’s office) in Mexico City.
Boutique firm DAT Consultores, S.C. handles a range of environmental mandates, among them authorisations; impact assessments for real estate, energy and infrastructure projects; and waste management. Founding partner Concepción Contreras is the group’s key contact.
August 2023 saw Garrigues welcome Georgina Gutiérrez Barbosa – previously a senior associate at Cacheaux, Cavazos & Newton – as head of the firm’s compact environmental, regulatory and sustainability team. Gutiérrez has notable experience in environmental compliance and administrative litigation.
Nader, Hayaux y Goebel, SC's sustainable transition working group is not an environmental practice as traditionally conceived but is instead focused on advice and consultancy (for clients such as BBVA, HSBC and Grupo FRISA) related to the World Economic Forum’s Climate Governance Initiative (CGI), along with associated matters such as green finance, sustainable development goals, the issuance of BioCredits and bonds, and environmentally conscious governance strategies, among other matters. Name partner Yves Hayaux-du-Tilly is the key contact and has led the firm’s efforts to establish not-for-profit entity Chapter Zero Mexico – effectively the local chapter of the CGI. Moreover, the firm announced the hire of Marcela Ánimas as a partner – effective as of January 2024; arriving from her own boutique, Ánimas’ incorporation should radically broaden the practice’s capabilities across the environmental impact, risk and compliance segments, along with water law.
